Position Summary
The Cultural Engagement Coordinator plays a key role in ensuring that all services, programs, and activities delivered at YYMNER are culturally safe, appropriate, and reflective of local Aboriginal culture.
The position provides cultural leadership, advice, and support to Elders, families, staff, and management. The role also contributes to workforce development, community engagement, cultural education, and the inclusion of Elders in culturally meaningful activities and events.
Key Responsibilities
Cultural Leadership and Advice
- Provide cultural awareness training to YYMS staff.
- Provide cultural advice and guidance to all staff of YYMNER.
- Promote understanding, respect, and culturally safe practices across the organisation.
- Provide cultural advice to the Kitchen team on preparing culturally appropriate menus and meal plans.
Elder and Family Support
- Ensure lifestyle activities are culturally appropriate and reflective of the local culture of Elders in residence.
- Provide culturally appropriate support to Elders and their families, including during palliative care.
- Liaise with Elders’ families on matters impacting the Elders’ daily care and wellbeing.
- Support the Elders Forum and ensure Elders’ voices are respected and represented.
Lifestyle, Events, and Community Engagement
- Support the Lifestyle Coordinator to organise cultural cook ups and activities.
- Assist with organising and supporting:
- NAIDOC events
- Elders Forum
- Community Festival
- Assist with coordination of the Community Festival and ensure Elders in residence actively participate.
- Strengthen links between YYMNER, families, and the wider community.
Workforce Development and Mentoring
- Mentor Aboriginal staff working at YYMNER.
- Work closely with the HR Manager to assist in building a strong local Aboriginal workforce.
- Liaise with Job Pathways and other agencies to advocate for recruitment of local Aboriginal job seekers into non-clinical roles.
- Support Aboriginal staff to:
- Access on the job training
- Complete online training modules
- Build confidence and career pathways.
Quality, Systems, and Teamwork
- Actively participate in quality improvement activities and accreditation processes.
- Use approved systems (e.g. LEE Care) to document relevant activities where required.
- Work collaboratively with clinical, lifestyle, and support teams to promote culturally safe care.
- Contribute positively to a respectful, inclusive, and culturally strong workplace.
Selection Criteria
Essential
- 50D Aboriginal Identified position for a local Aboriginal person to provide culturally informed leadership, guidance, and support across YYMNER.
- Demonstrated ability to provide cultural advice and guidance in a workplace setting.
- Experience working with Aboriginal Elders, families, and communities.
- Ability to mentor and support Aboriginal staff.
- Well-developed interpersonal and communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
- Understanding of confidentiality, privacy, and professional boundaries.
- Ability to work respectfully with frail aged persons and families.
- Current C Class Driver’s License.
Desirable
- Experience working in aged care, community services, or health settings.
- Experience delivering or supporting cultural awareness training.
- Familiarity with quality systems and documentation
Mandatory
- Satisfactory National Police Clearance.
- Working with Children Check (if required).
- First Aid Certificate (or willingness to obtain).
