Throughout July, Yura Yungi Medical Service proudly recognised Dry July, a national campaign that encourages people to take a break from alcohol for the month of July. While the campaign is widely recognised for raising funds to support people affected by cancer, it also inspires participants to reflect on their drinking habits and experience the personal health benefits that can come from taking a break from alcohol, such as improved sleep, increased energy and overall wellbeing. The campaign also encourages conversations about making healthier lifestyle choices that can continue well beyond the month of July.
At YYMS, our focus throughout Dry July was on promoting health, wellbeing and informed choices within our community. We recognise that everyone's journey is different, and that choosing to reduce or stop drinking alcohol can be challenging. Through education, encouragement and culturally safe support, we aimed to create opportunities for people to learn more about alcohol, explore healthier alternatives and understand that support is available whenever they are ready.
Throughout the month, our Social and Emotional Wellbeing (SEWB) team delivered a range of activities designed to encourage positive conversations around alcohol awareness and healthier lifestyle choices.
As part of our Yura Yungi Nguyuru Waaringarrem Health & Wellbeing Festival during NAIDOC Week, the SEWB team hosted an educational stall where community members could learn more about alcohol awareness while sampling a variety of refreshing non-alcoholic drink alternatives. The stall promoted the important message that you don't need alcohol to enjoy celebrations, connect with others or have a great time. By offering alternative beverage options and providing practical education, the team encouraged community members to consider healthier choices while still embracing culture, community and connection.
The team also hosted a Dry July pop-up at the YYMS clinic, creating another opportunity for community members to enjoy a range of non-alcoholic beverages while engaging in conversations about alcohol awareness. The pop-up encouraged people to explore alcohol-free alternatives, ask questions and learn about the support available through our Social and Emotional Wellbeing team.
Throughout July, our SEWB team continued these important conversations during their weekly community group sessions. These sessions provided education around alcohol consumption, encouraged open and respectful discussions about its impacts on health and wellbeing, and offered practical strategies and support for those wanting to reduce or stop drinking. By creating safe and supportive spaces, participants were empowered to make informed decisions that best suited their individual circumstances and goals.
To close out Dry July, staff also came together for a community walk, celebrating healthy choices, connection and wellbeing. It was a chance to reflect on the positive messages shared throughout the month and recognise that even small lifestyle changes can have lasting benefits for ourselves, our families and our communities.
Although Dry July has come to an end, the conversations don't have to. At Yura Yungi Medical Service, our team is here all year round to provide confidential, culturally safe support, information and guidance for anyone wanting to reduce or stop drinking alcohol.
If you're thinking about making a change or would simply like to have a yarn about your options, we encourage you to reach out to our team. You can also access free, confidential support 24 hours a day through Alcohol. Think Again by calling (08) 9442 5000 or 1800 198 024.
Together, we can continue supporting healthier choices, stronger families and stronger communities.
