Family, Healing and Connection on Country: Family Bush Camp 2026

Published on Monday, 31 August 2026 at 4:01:02 PM

Families came together for three special days on Country at Violet Valley, creating space for connection, healing, wellbeing and quality time together away from the distractions of everyday life.

The three-day Family Bush Camp provided families with an opportunity to step away from the pressures of everyday life and spend quality time together on Country. From yarning and wellbeing sessions to creative activities, music, fishing and exploring the local environment, the camp offered something for everyone and created plenty of opportunities for families to connect and make memories together.

The camp began with families arriving, setting up their camps and coming together for a check-in and yarning session. This provided an opportunity for everyone to settle in, connect with one another and share how they were feeling, setting a positive tone for the days ahead.

The following morning began with a yarning session focused on healthy eating, healthy relationships and overall social and emotional wellbeing. Families also had the opportunity to learn more about the range of support and services available through Yura Yungi Aboriginal Medical Service for individuals and families in our community.

The morning was followed by musical entertainment from SEWB Male Counsellor, Cobber, bringing families together through music before everyone enjoyed a free afternoon at the campground.

Located alongside the riverbed where the Bow River begins, Violet Valley provided a beautiful setting for families to spend time on Country. Families were able to slow down, relax and enjoy the natural surroundings, while the children had plenty to explore.

There were freshwater crocodiles and water goannas to spot, fishing to enjoy and local wildlife to discover. Families also had the unique experience of watching cattle being mustered, with station workers moving through the area on horseback, giving the children an opportunity to experience life on Country up close.

A canvas art session provided another opportunity for families to get creative and spend time together, encouraging self-expression and connection through art. The activity was particularly enjoyed by the children, who embraced the opportunity to get creative and express themselves through their artwork.

Before heading home, families came together for a special session with  Boyd Holden, who shared knowledge about horses, including how to ride and train them. The session also explored how horses can sense human feelings and respond to the emotions around them.

One message that stood out was that “horses are just like your mate”, highlighting the importance of trust, connection, understanding and communication in building relationships. It was a meaningful way to finish the camp and offered families a different perspective on connection and emotional awareness.

The Importance of Family and Country

The Family Bush Camp was about much more than spending a few days away. It created an opportunity for families to strengthen their connection with each other, Country and community in a safe and supportive environment.

Being on Country can support social and emotional wellbeing by creating opportunities to slow down, spend time outdoors and reconnect with culture, family and community. It can also create space for families to share stories, learn together and build positive memories.

For children especially, experiences on Country can provide opportunities to explore, learn about the natural environment and develop a deeper connection to the places and communities around them.

Family healing can happen in many ways. It can be through a yarn, sharing a meal, spending time with children, learning something new, creating something together or simply having the opportunity to be present with one another.

Creating safe spaces where families can come together, strengthen relationships and connect with support is an important part of promoting family wellbeing and healing. The camp provided families with an opportunity to do just that, surrounded by Country and community.

A Time to Reconnect

Throughout the three days, families shared moments of laughter, learning, creativity and connection. The camp provided an opportunity for families to simply enjoy being together, strengthen relationships and create positive memories.

One of the key reflections from the camp was how valuable it was to have dedicated time to spend with family. Families shared that it was really good to be at camp and spend quality time with family, with the experience providing an opportunity to connect and enjoy being together.

The three days at Violet Valley highlighted the value of creating opportunities for families to come together, strengthen connections and experience the benefits of spending time on Country.

A big thank you to all the families who joined us and contributed to making the camp such a positive and meaningful experience. We would also like to thank Violet Valley Campground for hosting us and providing a beautiful setting for families to connect, relax and enjoy time on Country.

We look forward to continuing to create opportunities that support family wellbeing, strengthen relationships and promote safe, healthy and strong families in our community.
