Supporting family wellbeing through cultural connection

The Early Childhood Family Supports Team recently supported a cultural healing trip to the Ord River, bringing together three young women and a grandmother caring for her three young grandchildren, aged between three and seven. Set on Country, the outing was designed to strengthen cultural connection while supporting the wellbeing of both generations.

Surrounded by the natural landscape, families were given the opportunity to slow down, breathe, and learn together. Being on Country created a relaxed and grounding environment, one that encouraged connection, shared experiences, and gentle learning through observation and participation.

Throughout the day, staff witnessed meaningful moments between the grandmother and her grandchildren. The calm of the river and surrounding land helped foster positive interactions, bonding, and shared understanding, highlighting the powerful role that Country plays in supporting emotional and cultural wellbeing.

As part of the outing, our team also provided practical water safety education, offering families guidance on staying safe around the river. These conversations were woven naturally into the day, ensuring learning took place in a supportive and culturally safe way.

At its heart, the trip was about cultural healing on Country, creating space for families to reconnect with land, culture, and each other. Experiences like these help build confidence and resilience, strengthening family relationships while reinforcing the deep connection between wellbeing, culture, and Country.
