Staff from Yura Yungi Medical Service and Yura Yungi Menkawum Ngurra Elders Residence recently came together to take part in a dedicated wellbeing and happiness workshop, reinforcing our organisation’s ongoing commitment to supporting the health and wellbeing of our workforce.
The session was facilitated by the team from The Happiness Co as part of their Road to Happiness Tour, which delivers practical tools and strategies to help individuals better understand their emotions, build resilience, and create positive change in their daily lives.
Bringing staff together from across services created a valuable opportunity to connect, reflect, and prioritise wellbeing — not just for ourselves, but for the communities we support every day.
Key Learnings from the Workshop
Throughout the session, staff explored simple yet powerful concepts to help navigate everyday challenges and improve overall wellbeing.
One key message that resonated strongly was the idea that “anger is a choice.” While emotions are a natural response, we learned that the initial emotional reaction lasts around 90 seconds — beyond that, how we respond becomes a choice. This insight encourages greater self-awareness and empowers individuals to take control of their reactions.
Staff were also introduced to the Feel, Think, Act model, a practical framework that highlights how our feelings influence our thoughts, which guide our actions and ultimately shape our experiences and outcomes.
Another powerful message shared was:
“Happier tomorrow than we are today.”
This reflects the importance of continuous growth and making small, positive changes that build over time.
The workshop also encouraged reflection on how our actions shape our story, reminding us that even small decisions can have a lasting impact on our wellbeing and the way we experience life.
Creating Space for Joy and Reducing Stress
A key theme throughout the session was the importance of making time for joy. As adults, it’s easy to become caught up in responsibilities and forget to have fun — yet these moments are essential for maintaining balance and wellbeing.
Staff were encouraged to adopt simple daily practices to help reduce stress and lower cortisol levels. These included:
- Going for a walk outdoors
- Spending time drawing, painting, or doing art
- Completing a jigsaw or puzzle
- Listening to music or a podcast
- Practising deep breathing or mindfulness
- Journaling thoughts or reflections
- Connecting with family, friends, or community
Even small actions like these, when done consistently, can have a meaningful impact.
Building Positive Habits for Lasting Change
The workshop also highlighted the power of habit-building. Creating positive change doesn’t require big steps — it starts with small, consistent actions.
It was shared that:
- It can take around 20 days to form a habit
- And approximately 3 months for that habit to become part of your routine or “blueprint”
This reinforces the importance of consistency, patience, and self-compassion when working towards personal wellbeing goals.
A Commitment to Our People
At Yura Yungi, we recognise that strong, supported staff are at the heart of delivering quality care to our community. Investing in staff wellbeing is not only about individual health — it strengthens our entire organisation and the services we provide.
We extend our sincere thanks to the team from The Happiness Co for visiting and sharing their knowledge, energy, and practical tools with our staff.
Workshops like this play an important role in creating a positive, supportive workplace culture — one where our people feel valued, connected, and empowered.
