Last week, Yura Yungi Medical Service was proudly represented at both the NACCHO Youth Conference and the annual NACCHO Members Conference, where staff and youth leaders took part in three days of knowledge sharing, networking and discussions focused on strengthening Aboriginal community-controlled health.

Youth Leaders Step Forward at the NACCHO Youth Conference

On Monday 8th of December, three of Yura Yungi’s young representatives proudly attended the annual NACCHO Youth Conference, joining youth leaders from across the country to share experiences, build connections, and strengthen their leadership journeys. This year’s conference placed a strong focus on leadership in community, encouraging young people to use their voice and step confidently into roles that support the health and wellbeing of their people.

Two of Yura Yungi’s staff members, Shakana Garstone, Quality Coordinator, and Jodie Bedford, SEWB Manager, were invited to present alongside KAMS as part of the conference program.

Shakana and Jodie shared their personal leadership journeys and spoke about the programs they are currently involved in — the Rising Leaders Program and the High Potential Leadership Program. Their presentations offered insight into how these programs have supported their growth and strengthened their confidence.

Addressing Youth Wellbeing: Tex Garstone’s Presentation at the NACCHO Members Conference

At the NACCHO Members Conference, Yura Yungi’s newly appointed Community Liaison – Suicide Prevention Officer, Tex Garstone, took to the main stage, standing alongside fellow young leader Janaya Kopp. Together, they addressed one of the largest gatherings of Aboriginal health leaders in the country, an audience of over 1,100 NACCHO members, CEOs, clinicians, health workers, community leaders, and sector representatives dedicated to Aboriginal health.

Tex delivered a powerful and courageous speech highlighting two critical issues impacting young people in the Kimberley:

  • the urgent and ongoing crisis of youth suicide, and
  • the deeply concerning rates of youth incarceration across the region.

Speaking with strength and clarity, Tex emphasised the importance of investing in culturally grounded support systems and community-driven solutions to protect and uplift young people. His message was heartfelt, brave, and grounded in the lived realities faced by many Kimberley families.

Proud Representation and a Bright Future Ahead For Yura Yungi

Yura Yungi is incredibly proud of Shakana, Jodie, Tex, and our staff representatives for the strength, professionalism and leadership they brought to both conferences. Their contributions reflect the commitment of our organisation to nurture emerging leaders and to support young people in stepping into roles where their voices are not only heard but valued.

Their presence at the NACCHO Youth and Members Conferences demonstrates the growing leadership talent within our community and reaffirms our belief that our health, our wellbeing, and our future truly sit in our own hands.
