Cobber Leads the Way with “Drink Less, Move More” Initiative

A staff member at our organisation is leading by example, embracing a healthier lifestyle and shedding light on the national “Drink Less, Move More” movement — an initiative already having a positive impact on wellbeing.

Inspired by health guidance from organisations such as the Cancer Council, the initiative focuses on making simple, sustainable changes that support both physical and mental health.

By reducing alcohol consumption and increasing daily movement, individuals can experience improved energy levels, better sleep quality, and enhanced overall wellbeing. These simple changes not only support personal health but can also contribute to a more positive and productive workplace.

Importantly, increasing awareness around alcohol consumption is a key part of this initiative. Research shows that alcohol is linked to at least seven types of cancer, including bowel, liver, and breast cancer, and the risk increases with the amount consumed.
Even small reductions in alcohol intake can make a meaningful difference to long-term health outcomes.

National guidelines recommend:

  • Limiting alcohol to no more than 10 standard drinks per week
  • No more than 4 drinks on any one day.
  • Understanding what a “standard drink” looks like — and recognising that many drinks served are often more than one standard — can also support more informed choices.

Simple, practical strategies can help make these changes achievable, including:

  • Introducing alcohol-free days each week
  • Alternating alcoholic drinks with water
  • Choosing low or non-alcoholic options
  • Engaging in active, social alternatives such as walking, sport, or spending time outdoors

These approaches not only reduce health risks but also support better sleep, improved mood, increased energy, and healthier weight management.

This initiative highlights how small, practical changes can lead to meaningful outcomes. It also reflects our organisation’s commitment to encouraging healthier lifestyle choices.

We commend this proactive approach and hope it inspires others to consider simple ways to prioritise their own health and wellbeing.
